The Road To Exmouth, Western Australia

scuba review - sunset over shark bay, western australia

Getting to Exmouth from Perth is a 15 hour drive North.  There is a whole lot of nothing in-between, but there are a couple of worthwhile stopping off points to break up the journey..

Shark Bay - World Heritage Listed

Monkey Mia in Shark Bay is famous for the wild dolphins that come right into the shallows (less than 1 meter) to interact with humans.  A process that was started many years ago by locals who hand fed the dolphins is now controlled by the government.  Strict rules apply and the number of fish that are fed is tightly controlled.  This ensures that the dolphins continue to hunt naturally in the wild and do not become dependant on handouts.
This dolphin (left) came right up and rubbed against my legs as I stood knee deep in the water.  Just be warned that they have very bad breath!!!!

Coral Bay is only 90 minuets south of Exmouth and is a highly regarded snorkelling area.  There is a fringing reef that protects the bay making snorkelling very easy.  It is also possible to snorkel with Manta Rays here.
